Tatianna Mello Pereira da Silva (27), MSc in Public Policy and MPhil in Economic and Environmental Law;
Inclusive Integrated Solid Waste Management.
The jury was impressed by Tatianna’s commitment to linking environmental policy initiatives to social progress.
Her research will be internationally applicable to many emerging economies and middle income countries
in which the problem of waste disposal is an increasingly pressing concern.

Heather Buckley (30), PhD in Green and Inorganic Chemistry; A sustainable, Earth-abundant alternative to platinum - tethered molecular electrocatalysts for PEM Fuel Cells.
The jury appreciated Heather’s commitment to Green Chemistry as a relatively new field of study with vast potential for radical new thinking. They also believe her experience as an experimental scientist and team leader will help her take full advantage of opportunities for scientific exchange during the extended study visit to Germany.

The jury lauded Patricio’s interdisciplinary and novel approach in a field of growing importance. They expect his work to largely contribute to sustainable rural development while making the use of renewable energy more efficient.

LIU Jing (31), PhD in Microbial fuel cell technology; Microbial fuel cells as a clean and sustainable energy source.
The jury was impressed both by Jing’s past research successes and by her vision for future research projects.
They believe that her contribution to the knowLEDge base available on the bio-electrocatalytic process is extremely valuable to furthering the cause of sustainable energy development.
WANG Huai (29), PhD in Power Electronics; Reliable and sustainable power electronics for efficient appliances and renewable energy applications.
The Jury applauded Huai’s track record of successful research and his combination of practical knowledge and innovative thinking in his current project.
They believe that participation in the GreenTalents Forum will give him fresh ideas and new momentum for the research challenges ahead.
WEI Li (32), PhD in Electrical Engineering; New energy applications and energy storage systems with a focus on supercapacitor systems.
The jury was impressed with Li’s innovative and interdisciplinary approach to her research.
They are confident that participation in the Green Talents Forum will help her career in achieving
“the mature and reliable application of supercapacitor energy storage systems”.

based on energy management.
The jury was impressed by the way in which Juan’s research is both wide in scope and concrete in its application. Well-designed policy-making tools to promote low-carbon landscape development have great potential to help achieve sustainable rural communities.

Martin Agyemang (30), PhD Student in Environmental Management; Sustainable Supply Chain Management.
The Jury was impressed with Martin’s academic record and his commitment to widening the discourse on sustainability to become more inclusive and holistic.

Nikolaos Moustakas (30), PhD Student in Photocatalysis/Artificial Photosynthesis; Solar Fuels - CO2 conversion to hydrocarbon chains.
The Jury lauded Nikolaos’ innovative approach to this important area of research.
His experiment is making a real contribution to its progress and the impact of perfecting artificial photosynthesis could be enormous.

Femeena Pandara Valappil (24), MTech in Water Resources Engineering; Spatial optimization of cropping pattern
for food and biofuel production with minimum downstream pollution.
The jury was impressed by Femeena’s resourcefulness in solving a complex agriculture problem through truly scientific and interdisciplinary means.

Adrianus Aria (31), PhD in Aeronautics; Carbon Nanomaterials.
The jury was impressed by Adrianus’ already impressive scientific achievements as well as his forward-thinking and relevant plans for bringing nanomaterials into the fore as one of the Green Talents 2014.
Kenya m.
Kennedy Mbeva (26), MSc Student in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development;
Climate finance governance: Effectiveness, Safeguards, Carbon Trading.
The Jury was particularly impressed with Kennedy’s enthusiastic activism and his clear vision
of the practical applicability of his research to improving sustainable development in the future.
They felt that he would benefit greatly from the opportunity to interact with German specialists as he prepares for the next phase of his academic career.
Madagascar f.
Lovanomenjanahary Marline (27), PhD Student in Botany; Factors affecting diversity and distribution of bryophytes in Madagascar under a changing environment:
The Jury was impressed with Lova’s academic record – she has shown great initiative and broken new ground in the study of tropical bryology in Madagascar,
working under difficult research conditions and being awarded with both national and international scholarships.
They believe that participating in the Green Talents forum will help her expand her scientific network
and present the emerging results of this new area of botany to the international scientific community.
Malaysia m.
Jian-Yuan Lee (25), PhD Student in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry; Sustainable chemistry, material science and water technology.
The jury is convinced that Jian-Yuan will benefit greatly from an exchange of ideas during the Green Talents Forum, both with German experts in his field and with his fellow Awardees.
They were also impressed with his entrepreneurial spirit.

Paribesh Pradhan (32), MSc Student in Physical Geography; Response of snow and glaciers melt to climate change,
its effect on runoff and water availability scenarios in the Himalayas as well as natural hazard and risk assessment.
The Jury was impressed by the complementary way Paribesh is applying his specialist practical knowledge of the region to his scientific research.
They believe the Green Talents Forum will give him the opportunity for an exchange of ideas
and access to new perspectives before he launches the next phase of his academic career.

Asad Mehmood (30), PhD in Energy and Environmental Engineering; Low temperature fuel cells,
development of oxygen depolarised cathodes for Brine electrolysis.
The jury lauded Asad’s commitment to this important new technology.
They are convinced that participation in the Green Talents Forum will help Asad meet his goal of comparing his research
methodology with that of other young scientists and German experts in order to make it more efficient and productive.
Furthermore, the jury was impressed by Asad’s dedication to the scientific search for sustainable energy systems as a way of helping people around the world.
Muhammad Saif Ur Rehman (31), PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering;
Bioenergy from crop residue / Wastewater treatment using microalgae / Wastewater treatment by plant based biosorbents.
The Jury lauded Saif’s holistic approach to sustainable development research.
His projects not only have direct practical applicability but also seek unidentified areas of synergy between hitherto
separate production processes to form a more efficient and altogether more sustainable process.

Maksymilian Kochanski (23), MEng Student in Sustainable Energy Engineering and MBA Student in Economics;
Energy efficiency, including usage of IT for optimising environmental impact of energy systems.
The Jury valued Maksymilian’s record of testing his theories in practical experiments and his innovative approach to improving energy sustainability.
They believe the Green Talents Forum will prove to be the perfect opportunity for Maksymilian to connect with other young scientists
in the same field and gain fresh input as he starts the next phase of his research.
Nikodem Szumilo (26), PhD Student in Real Estate Finance; Financial and investment advantages of sustainability in real estate markets.
The jury lauded Nikodem’s research strategy. They agree with his statement that “the research and technology
we have available should allow for a much higher level of sustainability but are hindered by multidisciplinary practical barriers”,
and are convinced that Nikodem’s research will help overcome this.
South Africa f.
Kerry Bobbins (27), MSc in Environmental Water Management; Use of Green Infrastructure for sustainable policy-making in the fields of environmental management and resource planning.
The Jury was particularly impressed by the breadth of Kerry’s practical experience and believes that her aim of benefiting
from the experience of established practices at the interface between science and policy in Germany during her stay will serve her well in the future.

Burak Guzelturk (27), PhD Candidate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Nanotechnology, nanophotonics for energy efficiency,
solar energy harvesting, efficient lighting and laser systems.
The jury was impressed by Burak’s broad array of successful experiments and his enthusiastic commitment to interdisciplinary research.
They are confident that participation in the Green Talents Forum will give him further impulses for research projects and future collaborations.
USA f.
Irene Brockman (28), PhD Candidate in Chemical Engineering; Developing an Escherichia coli strain to improve yields of glucaric acid.
The jury was impressed by Irene’s ability to link chemical production alternatives with sustainability initiatives
in order to create efficient alternatives for the industrial sector. Her developments have the potential to provide a future framework
for environmentally conscious biotechnology production.
Zimbabwe f./m.
Melissa Sikosana (26), Master Student in Chemical Engineering; Nutrient and Energy Recovery from Sewage.
The Jury was impressed by Melissa’s early achievements and her ongoing efforts to link scientific solutions to societal innovations.
Nkulumo Zinyengere (28), PhD Candidate in Environmental and Geographical Science; Assessing impacts of climate change
and adaptation options for dry land farming systems in southern Africa.
Ultimately, Nkulumo is dedicated to a career in “helping to develop more effective and innovative development interventions
in dealing with the promotion of food security and poverty alleviation in Africa in the face of climate change and variability among other challenges”.
